Here are some frequently asked questions when considering seeing a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC):

  • What issues can a Licensed Mental Health Counselor help me with?

LMHCs can help with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship problems, trauma, grief, addiction, and more. They are trained to address both mental health and emotional challenges.

  • Do you accept insurance?

We currently accept Aetna and Cigna. Additionally, our office will provide the necessary paperwork for you to file with your own insurance for out-of-network providers. For more information about fees and insurance, please see our Fees and Insurance page.

  • How do I know if I need counseling?

If you are experiencing persistent emotional distress, difficulty coping with daily life, or if you're facing challenges that feel overwhelming, counseling can provide support and strategies for improvement.

  • What can I expect during my first session?

During your first session, your counselor will ask questions to understand your background, concerns, and goals. This initial assessment helps in creating a personalized treatment plan. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss any concerns you might have.

  • How long does therapy usually last?

The duration of therapy varies depending on individual needs and goals. Some people may find significant improvement in a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy.

  • What types of therapy do you offer?

Our licensed counselors offer a variety of therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based therapy, solution-focused therapy, hypnosis, and others, tailored to your specific needs.

  • How do you ensure my privacy and confidentiality?

Your privacy is a top priority. We adhere to strict confidentiality laws and professional ethics. Information shared in therapy is protected, with exceptions only in cases of immediate danger or legal obligations.

  • How often will we meet?

The frequency of sessions is typically determined by your needs and goals. We might start with weekly sessions and adjust as progress is made.

  • What is your approach to therapy?

Our approach is client-centered and collaborative. We use evidence-based techniques and tailor our methods to each individual’s unique situation and goals, fostering a safe and supportive environment.

  • How do I know if you're the right therapist for me?

It’s important to feel comfortable and understood by your therapist. An initial consultation can help determine if we’re a good fit. You can also ask about your counselor's experience, approach, and success with similar issues.

  • What should I do if I feel uncomfortable or dissatisfied with my therapy?

Open communication is key. If you feel uncomfortable or dissatisfied, please bring it up during our sessions. Together, we can adjust the approach or discuss alternative options to ensure you get the most out of therapy.

  • Can you prescribe medication?

No, LMHCs cannot prescribe medication. However, we can work closely with psychiatrists or primary care physicians to coordinate care if medication is needed.

  • How do I prepare for my first session?

Reflect on your reasons for seeking therapy and any specific goals or issues you’d like to address. It can also be helpful to write down any questions or concerns you have to discuss during the session.

  • What should I do in case of a crisis or emergency between sessions?

In case of a crisis, you should seek immediate help by calling emergency services (911 or 988) or visiting the nearest emergency room.
